How to record audio tapes to CD

Is it possible to transfer an audio tape from my audio system (I have separate amplifier, tape, CD and record deck) to my PC and then record it on to a CD? I own the copyright for the tape. Similarly I have a number of old vinyl LPs that I would like to move to CD for personal use only, none of which is available on CD.

Yes it is, although strictly speaking it makes no difference whether an LP is available on CD or not: you still shouldn't copy it. What you need to do is record the music as a WAV file in standard stereo format (44.1KHz sample rate, 16bit) using software such as Cool Edit (www.syntrillium.com). You can then burn it on to CD using the software that came with your CD writer, such as Adaptec's Easy CD Creator.

You need a cable to connect the tape record outlets of your amplifier to the line input of your sound card. Unless you're a dab hand with electronics this is probably the hardest part to get right. For best results you will need some kind of mixer box, so you can adjust the levels and get a good match. Maplin Electronics (www.maplin.co.uk) should sell all the equipment you need.
